Celebrating 25 years of London Children’s Ballet

“In 1994, I put an ad in the Dancing Times magazine to say that auditions would be held in London for a new children’s ballet company where no charge would be made. On the appointed day, 133 boys and girls turned up, some boys in shorts, t-shirts and bare feet, some girls with perfectly turned out ballet buns. There was a great excitement in the air. We had accidentally hit a vein of undiscovered talent that began the London Children’s Ballet story.

And now, here we are in 2019 celebrating our 25th Anniversary. Every year 10,000 people are touched by LCB’s work. Across two days in November last year, over 700 boys and girls aged 9-15 auditioned for LCB’s 25th Anniversary production of one of our most popular ballets, Ballet Shoes. LCB has a busy office of people managing LCB’s thriving outreach programmes, and three touring companies taking ballet to some of the most isolated people in the community each year.

In 2019, we have launched our first national programme, Ballet in a Box, that enables young dancers in local ballet schools throughout the UK to have access to LCB’s original scores, choreography and teaching aids. This programme, that could launch hundreds of little outreach companies throughout the UK and beyond, extends LCB’s outreach mission farther than we ever could have imagined at those first auditions in 1994.

London Children’s Ballet has been able to offer the LCB performance experience free of charge to families thanks to the generosity of individuals donors, Trusts and Foundations, Committee members and the many volunteers and members of the creative teams who have been so generous is their time and support.

As we as we celebrate this significant anniversary and embark on the next LCB chapter, I hope we can count upon you to join our valued supporters this year. Thank you."
