Ballet for £1

More than 16,500 people have seen their first ballet through the LCB's Ballet for £1 programme. This outreach comprises two matine performances reserved for people who cannot attend a performance without some kind of support. Charities for children and the elderly and inner-city schools are invited to apply for the Thursday and Friday matinees where all tickets are priced at £1.

"The interest and demand for these £1 tickets for schools seems endless. We could fill many more matinees" says Victoria Gillies, the volunteer who organises the schools performance "There is a palpable excitement in the air as the children discover a world they want to explore. The dark theatre bursting into bright lights, changing moods, colourful costumes, magical sets all create an environment beyond their imagination."

One teacher from a special needs school said "For these children who have real difficulty with verbal communication, it is reassuring and inspiring for them to see non-verbal expression telling a story. The ballet therefore speaks to them in a way nothing else can. After the ballet, some of the cast went to the foyer in costume to meet the school children, a definite highlight of the outing."
